Your Jeep Cherokee is equipped with a smart instrument panel that provides informative and helpful messages about your SUV. But what do all of these different lights and symbols mean and what should you do when you see them pop up?

The Glendale Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram (CJDR) staff wants you to be prepared whenever you see these symbols. That's why we've created this guide for St. Louis, Chesterfield, and Kirkwood, Missouri, drivers. Read on to learn all about the different lights that might appear on your Cherokee dashboard.

Warning Lights

Warning lights primarily alert you when a crucial system or part is malfunctioning or needs immediate attention. Read on to learn about the various warning symbols that illuminate in either red or yellow.

Red Warning Lights

One set of red warning lights alerts you when a crucial safety feature is not engaged, such as a seat belt or the front passenger airbag. However, you'll also see a red illuminated symbol of a car with all the doors open if one or more doors are ajar.

Other symbols illuminate red when a system is faulty. For example, when your vehicle's battery is not charging properly, your dashboard will display an illuminated red battery symbol.

We recommend that you pull over and turn off your SUV if you see any red warning lights illuminated. We strongly suggest that you either get to your nearest service center ASAP or arrange a tow to have your Cherokee inspected and repaired.

Yellow Warning Lights

Rather than red, some warning symbols will illuminate in yellow. Like a red warning light, these light up when a specific system is malfunctioning. However, unlike with red warning lights, you'll still be able to continue operating your Cherokee until your scheduled service in most cases.

One example of a symbol that falls under this category is the engine check light. This illuminates as the outline of an engine. When you see this, you'll need to schedule a service as soon as you can since there might be a loose gas cap or other small issue.

Indicator Lights

Your Jeep Cherokee also displays symbols on the dashboard that are categorized as indicators. Unlike warning lights, these are usually not alerting you to danger or a malfunction. Instead, they signal that a certain feature is turned on or off.

Yellow Indicator Lights

There are only three symbols that will illuminate in yellow as indicator lights:

  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW) Off
  • 4WD Low Indicator (if equipped)
  • Rear Axle Lock

The way you know that a yellow light is an indicator versus a warning light is by the symbols. Warning and indicator lights do not share the same symbols. However, if you need to double-check, look inside your owner's manual.

Green Indicator Lights

Green indicator lights illuminate when certain features are engaged, such as Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), front fog lights, or a turning signal.

White Indicator Lights

White indicator lights are similar to green indicator lights in that they let you know that an equipped feature is engaged. For instance, the Hill Descent Control feature will display as the outline of an SUV tilted downward (as if traveling downhill) with a cruise control symbol over it.
