Next time you're behind the wheel and one of the dashboard lights illuminates, you might be a bit puzzled if you're not familiar with them. At Glendale Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram (CJDR), we've written up this Jeep Grand Cherokee dashboard lights guide so the next time you see a lighted symbol, you'll know what to do. We look forward to hearing back from our friends and neighbors in St. Louis, Chesterfield, and Kirkwood, Missouri.

Red Warning Lights

The Jeep Grand Cherokee comes with two levels of warning lights: red and yellow. This is also how they're arranged in your owner's manual. We'll take highlights from each warning level, starting with Red Warning Lights.

  • Brake Warning Light: This light is the word BRAKE in bold letters on a black background. This monitors multiple brake functions, like brake fluid level and parking brake application. If this light turns on, it may indicate that the parking brake is applied or the brake fluid level is low, among other braking-related issues.
  • Battery Charge Warning Light: This light resembles a typical car battery, with the plus and minus symbols on it. This will illuminate when the battery is not charging properly. If it stays on while the engine is running, there may be a malfunction in the charging system. We recommend scheduling service when you see this light.
  • Oil Temperature Warning Light: This light resembles an oil can with a temperature scale balanced on top. When you see this light, it means the engine oil temperature is very high. If this happens while driving, you should find the safest place to pull over immediately and wait for it to cool down.

Yellow Warning Lights

We're now in the less-severe category of warning lights, but nevertheless, they should be given equal attention. Here are a few highlights among the Yellow Warning Lights.

  • Low Fuel Warning Light: This light resembles a gas pump and lights up when the fuel level reaches 2.4 gallons and remains on until more fuel is added. Additionally, a single chime will accompany this light.
  • Service Forward Collision Warning (FCW) Light - If Equipped: This light resembles two vehicles colliding into each other with a giant exclamation point on the right-hand side. When illuminated, it generally indicates a fault in the Forward Collision Warning System. This is another sign that service is recommended.
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Warning Light: This light resembles an exclamation point inside an open cauldron. When illuminated, it means that either the tire pressure is lower than the recommended value or that slow pressure loss is happening.

Indicator Lights

A different category from Warning Lights, Indicator Lights serve the purpose of making you aware of operational things, like entering Sport Mode, for example. Indicators can appear in Yellow, Green, White, and Blue. Below, we'll take a highlight from each category.

  • Air Suspension Active Indicator Light - If Equipped: This light resembles a double image of your Grand Cherokee with arrows at the top and bottom. This is illuminated when the air suspension system is actively adjusting the ride height.
  • Sport Mode Indicator Light: This light looks like a striped racing flag, making it hard to ignore. When Sport Mode is engaged, this will illuminate.
  • Cruise Control Ready Indicator Light: This light looks like an odometer with the needle at a five to midnight position. This activates when the cruise control has been turned on but not set.
  • High Beam Indictor Light: This light resembles a half-oval headlight with lines coming out of it. This serves to mainly to show that the high beams are turned on. The owner's manual goes further in depth about the purposes of this light.
